मध्य जापान में 7.4 तीव्रता का शक्तिशाली भूकंप आया, जिसके बाद उत्तर-पश्चिमी तट पर सुनामी की चेतावनी जारी कर दी गई, संभावित 5 मीटर की सुनामी की भविष्यवाणी की गई. टोक्यो और आसपास के इलाकों में भूकंप के झटके महसूस किये गये. इसके बाद लगातार 21 बार से ज्यादा ऑफ्टर शाक भी महसूस किए गए.
