Salvador Sanchez is widely regarded as one of Mexico's greatest boxers. Many believe he could have become a global superstar if he hadn't died aged just 23 in a road accident. Sanchez turned pro at 16 and won his first 18 bouts - 17 early - before losing on a split decision to Antonio Becerra for the Mexican bantamweight title. He then went on a run of 15 wins and a draw he challenged Danny Lopez for the WBC featherweight title, winning in the 13th round. Sanchez made six defences, the most recent of which was an eighth round stoppage of Wilfredo Gomez.

Pat Cowdell had an excellent amateur career, winning gold at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch and a bronze at the 1976 Olympics in Motreal, both at bantamweight. He turned pro in 1977. He suffered an early loss to journeyman Alan Robertson due to cuts. His only other loss was a very controversial points defeat in his first meeting with Dave Needham for the British featherweight title. Cowdell beat Needham twice in British title fights and was 19-2 with 7 KOs, and ranked sixth by the WBC.
