00:00 The Garden Report is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS
00:04 Media Network.
00:05 Hey, Bobby Manning here.
00:08 Welcome to another Garden Report after the Celtics beat the Bulls, Josue Pavon by my
00:12 side in the in-season tournament.
00:15 Group play is done, Celtics made it by running up the score to as many as 35 in this one
00:19 in the fourth quarter.
00:20 Yeah, they did.
00:21 Playing starters, aggressively playing defense and scoring in transition, all the rest.
00:26 It was a very strange scene in Woes of Blood in the fourth quarter.
00:29 It was different.
00:30 It was unique, it was fun, I thought.
00:32 We talked about that in the last video, but it obviously led to a little bit of bad feelings
00:36 after the game.
00:37 And they were previewed before, Josue.
00:38 Billy Donovan got asked about the fact that the Celtics were going to have to run it up
00:43 here and he said you're going to have to talk to the league about that one.
00:48 He doesn't really have a firm take on it, but there was obviously some controversy because
00:51 Toronto did it against Chicago as well and DeMar DeRozan didn't like it and got ejected.
00:57 So that happens again here tonight.
00:59 Donovan approached Missoula during that fourth quarter to ask why he was doing what he was
01:03 doing there and Joe had to explain himself.
01:06 They talked a little bit after the game as well.
01:09 Joe apologized to Andre Drummond for intentionally fouling him twice during that stretch.
01:14 He went to talk to Drummond as well.
01:16 I'm not sure if they actually ended up coming together, but that was his intent after the
01:20 game to go apologize to him and set it on the podium as well.
01:24 A couple other Celtics weren't happy that they had to do this as well.
01:27 We'll get to that, but overall I know you didn't love it given the area you grew up
01:33 in.
01:34 Apologize to the competition.
01:35 Yeah, okay, I was going to say make that clear.
01:37 I didn't like that part of it.
01:39 Burning up the score, I mean look, this is what the NBA signed these guys up for.
01:43 What do you expect them to do?
01:45 The players agreed to it too.
01:46 Yeah, the players agreed to it.
01:47 Yeah, and something I mentioned in the Celtics post game show, the association, they all
01:50 had to agree to this and then to hear Jalen say what he said, it's just a, I mean is it
01:54 a PR move?
01:55 I think so.
01:56 Are they trying to send the right message to the kids?
01:58 If that's the case, then all right, I guess I understand.
02:00 The kids, no, I just think they have friends on the other side that they don't want to
02:03 feel like they were insulting.
02:04 Okay, all right, yeah, there's two sides to that.
02:05 Well, you know what I mean by the kids.
02:06 Maybe they don't want to say, "Hey, this is not what the sport's all about."
02:12 I don't think that's it at all.
02:14 I just don't blame any team that's trying to compete and get themselves into the tournament.
02:19 You had to do this.
02:20 That's the point, yeah.
02:21 I mean, that's the whole point and I'm surprised, honestly, especially from someone like DeMar
02:25 DeRozan who's been in the league long enough, who has competed at a high level, wouldn't
02:29 understand the magnitude or the reason behind it.
02:34 I mean, this is what this whole tournament thing is about and I think the Celtics, you're
02:39 positioned yourself to go ahead and finish out the last few minutes up by 25 plus or
02:46 23 plus, whatever it is you needed to reach.
02:48 If anything, if you're the Bulls, compete.
02:50 Make sure that that doesn't happen.
02:53 If it does, then you have something to work on from this point forward.
02:56 They have their own problems, obviously.
02:58 Right.
02:59 I just think this is like the number 17 on the list of problems that's going on in Chicago.
03:05 Yeah, they've lost five straight, eight to 10.
03:07 Come on, man.
03:08 I don't understand it.
03:09 I really don't.
03:10 Again, for Donovan to say, "Oh, we have to ask the league," this is his way of saying
03:14 he doesn't approve.
03:15 I feel like it's too little too late at this point.
03:18 Here's Drew Holiday's reaction to having to run up the score.
03:22 I don't know.
03:23 I guess maybe there's some things I don't agree with, but I also know that there's rules
03:26 and we also want to win.
03:28 We want to make the tournament and have the best seat that we can.
03:33 I don't like it, but I understand it.
03:34 What part of it do you not like?
03:35 Just kind of running up the score?
03:36 Yeah, running up the score.
03:37 I get the point differential, but it just feels weird.
03:43 Kind of like you're kind of disrespecting the game and your opponent, especially when
03:49 -- I mean, obviously they do what they want.
03:52 They then have their starters in.
03:53 Like I said, it feels weird, but I also understand it.
03:59 FanDuel is the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS Media Network.
04:03 Right now, new customers get $150 in bonus bets with any winning $5 Moneyline bet.
04:12 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
04:18 So he didn't like it.
04:19 Jalen Brown didn't like it either.
04:20 He said there's going to have to be some discussions over the offseason about where this goes.
04:24 Are they going to pull Joe Mazzullo aside tomorrow and be like, "Hey, man, we've got
04:27 to talk about what happened last night"?
04:29 Well, Joe said the players want to go for it.
04:31 Maybe it was the Lukes and Bans off the bench.
04:34 Everybody standing up being like, "Man, that's 20% of my contract.
04:37 Let's do it."
04:38 Ready for the $500,000.
04:39 Yeah, half a mil.
04:40 Give me that.
04:41 Yeah, so there might have been some different takes.
04:43 I think it was just Joe's decision.
04:45 Someone turned to him.
04:46 He was like, "All right, turn to the bench and put the starters back in when the Nets
04:49 were up too late and the Celtics were right around 20-25 there."
04:52 So I think that came from him.
04:54 And we talked about that decision in our last video here.
04:57 But as far as the point differential rule goes, which they had a problem with here,
05:01 I think you keep that.
05:02 I think it adds a unique element to these games.
05:06 And then you're just going to have to find a way to make it not matter as much because
05:08 there clearly weren't enough games here.
05:11 If you played every team in your group twice, there wouldn't have been a million ties, which
05:14 is why this became so important.
05:15 I mean, the Knicks had to run it up on the Hornets to clinch their spot tonight as well.
05:20 And I'm sure that's going on in the West right now too.
05:23 So you're just going to have to tinker with this.
05:25 Keep it going.
05:26 And obviously, no one cares about the $500,000 for the Celtics bench.
05:30 You need to have more stakes, I think, for the fans.
05:32 But they turned on this one.
05:33 I told you.
05:35 It went from earlier this week, fans of mine mentioned saying, "Who gives an F?
05:39 This doesn't matter," to today saying, "How'd they get in?"
05:42 And that's exactly, I think, what the NBA anticipated.
05:44 I mean, obviously, I don't think they expected the bad blood between the Timberwolves and
05:49 the Warriors to unfold.
05:50 But, I mean, is it bad that it did?
05:52 You know what I mean?
05:53 I mean, it's an awful situation for the NBA, or at least between those two teams.
05:58 But in terms of the competitive spirit, I mean, I guarantee you a lot of those Warriors
06:03 and Timberwolves fans were paying a lot more attention now, right?
06:05 I mean, especially with the season that the Timberwolves are having.
06:07 So I think teams like that, it's beneficial because you're put into these competitive
06:11 situations that you're not always faced with, you know, you're not always fighting for a
06:15 playoff spot, you know?
06:16 So that's always interesting as well.
06:18 But I think what naturally gets everyone into it is things like that.
06:23 Teams running the score, or at least can the other team stop that team from doing that,
06:26 which obviously wasn't the case here in Boston, but maybe it is, you know, between two other
06:31 teams.
06:32 And I think the closer we get to the championship, which would obviously be what the NBA was
06:36 banking on, that's when all the interest is going to be piled in.
06:39 I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if the ratings are higher than what the NBA anticipates, you
06:44 know?
06:45 You made a great point, too.
06:46 This is what it feels like to bet on the game.
06:48 Yeah, exactly.
06:49 So, I mean, how many betting sports fans out there are way more into the NBA right now
06:55 as opposed to watching an NFL game on Thursday night, you know?
06:59 There's a lot of benefits here for the league and its audience.
07:03 You know what the line was at halftime?
07:04 What?
07:05 22 and a half.
07:06 Jeez, man.
07:07 I mean, the Celtics end up winning by 27 tonight.
07:10 That was on FanDuel.
07:11 Joe Spade Pavone, Bobby Manning, you can get all the reaction in the game after.
07:15 Drummond declined to comment.
07:17 He was nice about it with us, but didn't want to talk about the free throw situation.
07:20 Work on those free throws, man.
07:22 Joe talked about the whole decision making and how he was going to react to the sportsmanship
07:28 on CLNS Media.
07:29 Jalen Drew's press is available there as well.
07:32 And our first video talking about the game tonight on Celtics All Access.
07:36 So subscribe over there.
07:37 We're back Thursday at Celtics practice and then Celtics Sixers on Friday before that
