BJP and Congress allege each other for ‘Tribal Exploitation’ | Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh Election
  • 5 months ago
Vivek Kol, the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Sidhi district unit in Madhya Pradesh, has resigned from the party in response to the incident where a man urinated on a tribal laborer in the district. Kol also criticized the local MLA in connection with the incident. The viral video of Pravesh Shukla urinating on tribal laborer Dashmesh Rawat caused a nationwide uproar, leading Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to invite the victim to his official residence, where he washed Rawat's feet as a gesture of atonement.

Vivek Kol informed news agency PTI that he had sent his resignation letter via email to Madhya Pradesh BJP president VD Sharma. Despite the party leadership urging him to reconsider, Kol stated that his decision to resign was final. Interestingly, Kol had previously contested the state Assembly polls unsuccessfully from the Churhat constituency on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket.

In his resignation letter, Kol criticized BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla from Sidhi, alleging that he had been upset by Shukla's actions over the past two years, including the alleged encroachment of tribal land and other atrocities in the district. Kol claimed that the recent incident of his alleged ""representative"" urinating on a tribal man further distressed him. The BJP has denied any links between the accused, Pravesh Shukla, and Kedarnath Shukla.

Pravesh Shukla was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Police on July 5, a day after the video surfaced. In addition to charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he also faced charges under the National Security Act (NSA). Following the incident, the illegal portion of Shukla's house was reportedly demolished. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan publicly apologized to the victim and washed his feet at the Chief Minister's residence in Bhopal. The state government provided financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the victim and an additional sum of Rs 1.5 lakh for the construction of his house.
