Alan Minter, undisputed middleweight world champion, defended his titles against the number one contender, Marvin Hagler.

Date: September 27, 1980

Venue: Wembley Arena, London

Minter stance: southpaw

Hagler stance: southpaw

Minter won the undisputed world middleweight title just six months earlier against Vito Antuofermo. Having beaten Antuofermo in a rematch on home turf. Minter faced the man most people felt should already be champion, following his controversial draw against Antuofermo in 1979.

Alan Minter was considered a good technical boxer, but he was notoriously prone to cuts around the eyes, and had already lost several pro fights because of cuts. Hagler was a ferocious, all-action fighter, although he was thought to have stamina issues at the time.

The build up to this bout led to accusations of racism against both fighters, with the bad blood seeming to start when Minter was ringside when Hagler challenged Antuofermo the previous year, and Hagler refused to shake Minter's hand after his unsuccessful challenge.
