Dennis Smith's Fatal Crash @ Queensland Raceway 2016 (Aftermath)

Dennis "Den" Smith from Alstonville, New South Wales, Australia, died following a crash at Queensland Raceway, about 14h30 on Wednesday, 03 August 2016. The 68-year-old driver failed to negotiate a bend and drove head-on into a tyre barrier, during the Ipswich Midweek Sprints, a round of the 2016 Midweek Sprint Series.

Paramedics performed CPR on the driver before he was pronounced dead at the scene. Den Smith drove an old red Ford Escort with a race cage that belonged to a friend who was at the track for the races with him and his son Craig Smith, also a motorsport enthusiast.

The 12-round Midweek Sprint Series was held at both the Lakeside Park and the Queensland Raceway, with results counting towards end of year trophies. It was reserved for road registered, unregistered and race cars, divided into seven categories and driven by drivers who are getting started in racing. The Queensland Raceway race used the 2.110-kilometer Clubman Circuit layout for the event.

Inaugurated in 1999, Queensland Raceway is located on the outskirts of Ipswich City, about 50 kilometers west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Ipswich City Council's Willowbank Motorsport Precinct, which also holds under lease the quarter-mile paved drag strip of Willowbank Raceway, the Ipswich Kart Club, the Kedron Motorcycle Club and the Ipswich West Moreton Auto Club short circuit.

A double tragedy at the track followed a year later, when Kurt Bull and Daniel King were killed on Saturday 19 August 2017 night. Two not racing related fatalities occurred at the Queensland Raceway course in 2013, including British Porsche Supercup star Sean Edwards, who died during a private session, while instructing a young driver on 15 October of that year.
