Race car driver Sean Edwards dies in Queensland Raceway crash

A young British racing driver Sean Edwards was killed in a high-speed crash near Brisbane at the Queensland Raceway Tuesday morning.

Edwards is the son of a famous British Formula One driver who stopped in the German 1976 Grand Prix to pull a fellow racer from a burning wreck.

26-year-old Edwards was the passenger in a 996 series Porsche GT3 as an instructor for a private session with 22-year-old driver Will Holzheimer when the car lost control in the last turn, Turn 6, of the Willowbank circuit and hit the tire wall at a speed of 200km/h.

Holzheimer is the son of Dellow Racing owner David Holzheimer. Holzheimer's family members, including his dad, witnessed the crash.

Edwards was killed instantly by the impact of the crash. Holzheimer is thought to have suffered severe leg and hip injuries. Holzheimer was trapped in the wreckage for two hours before he was airlifted to the intensive care unit of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. He is expected to recover from broken bones and internal injuries after undergoing surgery. Holzheimer's father said that Will was not burnt in the crash.

Holzheimer's father said that Will is in stable condition, but that he hadn't been able to remember what had happened.

Tributes to Sean Edwards began showing up on social media by Tuesday night. Head of Motorsport at Porsche, said young Edwards was "one of the most popular and successful" drivers in the Porsche series. Edwards won the Nurburgring and Dubai 24 Hours this year.
