Birmingham headlines 20 September: Michael Gove confirms government intervention at city council

Michael Gove has announced he will appoint commissioners to take over Birmingham City Council and will launch an inquiry into the authority after it declared itself effectively bankrupt. The commissioners will have power to make direct decisions if necessary.

Three men have been convicted of killing a man in broad daylight in Shard End earlier this year. Darren Smith aged 51 was ambushed by the men who assaulted him with a deadly weapon. Lee, Luke and Lewis O'Brien all pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in November.

Terrifying footage shows the moment two Rottweilers burst into a family home in Chelmsley Wood before mauling two cats to death in front of a pet owner's screaming children. One was killed instantly in the attack while the other was later put down at the vets.
