During the TMC's annual Martyrs' Day event in Kolkata, Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly withholding funds from West Bengal. He announced that TMC leaders would peacefully gherao the houses of all BJP leaders on August 5.

Addressing the gathering, Banerjee called upon TMC party workers from every block and ward in Bengal to peacefully gherao the houses of BJP workers between 10 am to 6 pm on August 5. He stated, ""With the permission of our leader Mamata Banerjee, I hereby declare that in response to BJP's funding obstructions, we will travel to Delhi on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, and on August 5, we will peacefully gherao the houses of all BJP leaders.""

Reacting to Abhishek Banerjee's statement, Suvendu Adhikari, in the Assembly on Friday, warned TMC workers that if they gherao BJP leaders' houses, the saffron party would block the state's ruling party MPs from entering Parliament. Adhikari emphasized that people's fundamental rights were at stake and expressed his intention to submit a copy of the FIR against Abhishek Banerjee to the court.

He further emphasized that individuals have a constitutionally recognized right to enter and leave their homes freely. He asserted that if the TMC goes to the houses of BJP leaders, they will not allow Trinamool MPs to enter Parliament, adding that the Chief Minister of Bengal should not support the gheraoing of BJP leaders' houses.

Adhikari recalled the actions of previous governments and parties, citing the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and their history of attacking and bombing processions for 34 years. He contrasted it with the TMC's current appeals for gheraoing houses.

Congress leader Soumya Aich Roy mentioned that the TMC had announced its intention to gherao 'Krishi Bhavan' on October 2, which marks Gandhiji's birthday, leading to office closures on that day.
