Amazon Union Battle Intensifies

The National Labor Relations Board has determined that Amazon violated labor laws by refusing to negotiate with a union representing employees at one of its New York warehouses. The NLRB is seeking remedies, including ordering Amazon to engage in good faith bargaining with the Amazon Labor Union and compensating the affected employees for the lost opportunity to negotiate. Workers at Amazon's Staten Island warehouse voted to join the ALU last April, but the company has challenged the results and refused to enter into contract talks with the union. The ALU has repeatedly urged Amazon to start negotiations, but the company has consistently declined. The ALU has faced setbacks, including losing two elections at other Amazon warehouses and experiencing divisions among its leaders and members. Recently, a group of former ALU members sued the union, alleging violations of its constitution and demanding an election for union officers.
