Wales headlines March 1: Welsh gov staff to strike, support for independence decreases, free month of buses in RCT
  • last year
Welsh government staff will go on strike later on this month in a dispute over pay. Union leaders have asked for a 10% pay rise for staff, but the Welsh government say that is unaffordable and could only offer a 2 to 3% increase. The strike day on the 15th march is also the day of the UK government’s latest budget.

Recent opinion polls on Welsh independence must be a ‘wake up call’ for the movement according to the CEO of yes Cymru. The latest figures show a decrease in support for independence to around 18% in favour with 55% against and the rest unsure. Gwern Gwynfil says more work needs to be done to convince fellow citizens.

Bus services within Rhondda Cynon Taff will be free throughout March as councillors aim to get more people using public transport in the county. The scheme will apply every day through the month on buses that start and end within RCT borders.
