New Zealand conspired to give Stuart Broad a reprieve in England's second innings after Scott Kuggeleijn and Tom Blundell left a catch to each other.
Broad had been making his first appearance as the dubbed 'nighthawk', with England captain Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum having given him the role as an attacking night watchman.
The 36-year-old attempted to live up to the expectations with a wild slog of his second ball, but only managed to smash high into the air.
A catch appeared inevitable, only for uncertainty between bowler Kuggeleijn and wicketkeeper Blundell to follow.
The pair left the catch for each other, with the ball dropping safely to the ground.
Broad's reprieve prompted astonished reactions from his watching England teammates on the balcony.
