TechCrunch reports that Facebook's parent company, Meta, is about to lose its main subcontractor for content moderation. .
On January 10, Kenya-based tech company Sama
announced the closure of its content moderation
division, citing the need to streamline operations.
The news comes months after both Meta
and Sama were sued in Kenya, facing accusations
of human trafficking, forced labor and more.
Just weeks ago, another lawsuit in Kenya
accused Meta of failing to prevent the
spread of hateful content on its platform. .
Now, Sama has announced that it will let go
of 200 employees, 3% of its team,
in an effort to exit content review services.
The current economic climate
requires more efficient and
streamlined business operations, Sama statement, via TechCrunch.
According to Sama, Meta has already
contracted Luxembourg-based Majorel to
compensate for the loss of Sama's contractors.
The lawsuit against Sama and Meta accuses the
two companies of forced labor, human trafficking,
unfair labor relations and labor busting.
The lawsuit also accuses the companies
of failing to provide "adequate"
mental health and psychosocial support.
