DH Changemakers 2023 | Sheela Halkurike | Koppal’s Ninasam graduate teaches nomadic women to fight for their rights
  • last year
Growing up, Sheela Halkurike would watch helplessly as the women around her were abused day after day. The environment at school was just the opposite - strict, peaceful. After a brief education, she was recruited as a singer for a theatre troupe, where she found her calling. She went on to study at Ninasam and acquire several years of experience in theatrical arts, after which she decided to dedicate her life to women from the nomadic community. Sheela is on a quest to help the people understand and demand their rights. For this, she uses her background in theatre. She conducts community discussions in which she encourages women to speak loudly and clearly; she puts up small skits to demonstrate their rights; she uses songs to address the unspeakable. In her ideal world, people will come forward for their own rights, without prompting. Every woman will be empowered to demand her due.
