Get To Know The Hwasong-17, North Korea's Largest Intercontinental Ballistic Missile!!!"The missile, launched at Pyongyang International Airport, traveled to a maximum altitude of 6,248.5 kilometers and flew for 1,090 km for 4,052 seconds before accurately hitting a predetermined area in the open waters of the Sea of Japan," KCNA said.
South Korea's military estimated Thursday's launch distance was 6,200 km (3,900 miles), far longer than the last ICBM, the Hwasong-15, North Korea tested in November 2017.
The missile landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone, sparking anger from Tokyo.
"The test is a clear sign that North Korea has made important qualitative progress in its illicit weapons program," said US-based analyst Ankit Panda.
"What's important about this ICBM is not how far it can go, but what it has the potential to carry, which is a lot of warheads, which is something North Korea has longed for," he said.
North Korea had conducted three ICBM tests before Thursday, the last of which was the Hwasong-15 in 2017.
KCNA said the launch proved the weapon worked and that its operation can now be guaranteed even "under a wartime environment".
