After his business failed in Shanghai, Li Rongguang returned to his hometown of Lichuan, Jiangxi to start afresh as a candy maker, making zhuang yuan tang, or top scorer candy — a snack made famous by a legendary scholar from the city.

Li, as scrappy as a businessman can be, grows his own ingredients, hand-makes the candy, and even dresses up in costume and dances to sell his candy online.
