Backed by Sidhu, Siddharth Chattopadhyaya appointed as Punjab DGP

Days after the leak of a letter on the drugs case written by ADGP SK Asthana, the Punjab government on Thursday removed Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota from the post of officiating DGP and gave the charge to Siddharth Chattopadhayaya.

The development comes just two days after the Union Public Service Commission convened an empanelment committee meeting on Dec 21 to begin the process of appointing the State's new Director General of Police.

The appointment of a regular DGP has remained a contentious issue in poll-bound Punjab, where state unit chief of Congress, Navjot Singh Sidhu, is believed to be pushing for Siddharth Chattopadhyaa to be appointed DGP.
