After month-long protests in Tamil Nadu in 2017 to lift the ban on Jallikattu, the bull taming festival is being held in the state on the occasion of Pongal. Special prayers were offered to the local deity before beginning the event. Jallikattu, which commenced on January 15 and continue till January 17, is a traditional bull taming festival where participants in a brazen show of masculinity try to dominate the bulls running recklessly on the field. The event is being hosted in places of historical importance like Avaniyapuram, Palamedu and Alanganallur respectively in Madurai district. On the second day it was held in Palamedu. The first day was held in Avaniyapuram.
