Assam NRC: Government cracking down on 'illegal immigrants,' could deport people to Bangladesh
  • 3 years ago
It's not just the US and Trump cracking down on illegal immigration. Assamese people have to prove they’re Indian before June 30, 2018. 3.29 crore people have submitted their documents to prove their ancestors lived in Assam before 1971. This is being done under Assam’s National Register of Citizens, with an aim to wipe out illegal immigrants in the city.

In the 1950s more than 2 lakh illegal immigrants were expelled under PM Nehru. But with the Bangladesh liberation movement in 1971, lakhs fled from East Pakistan to Assam. The current government wants to see documents up until March 24, 1971. People who aren't able to produce documents will be deported to Bangladesh. Should nationality be defined by ancestry?
