Assam: Illegal immigrants turn into vote-bank for politicians - NewsX
  • 5 years ago
The ongoing violence in Assam is but symptomatic of a deep-rooted conflict that traces its history back six decade. A near-continuous influx of Bangladeshis since independence in 1947 has skewed the demographics of the region. Politically rather than corrective measures successive governments have chosen only to milk vote banks. It goes all the way back to the 1950s when the first clashes over influx from then-East Pakistan broke out. A new dimension came when Bangladesh was formed in 1971... with a spurt in illegal migrations. In 20 years since Assam Muslim population rose over 77 percent. Clashes between Bodos and Muslims over basic resources have flared regularly.
