BV Nagarathna Could Be India's First Woman CJI As Centre Approved Collegium's List of Judges for SC

On August 26, the President approved all nine names, including three women, recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium & accepted by the government for appointment as judges of the apex court. The judges will take oath on August 31. Justice BV Nagarathna, of the Karnataka High Court, is in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027. Justice Nagarathna, born on October 30, 1962, is the daughter of former CJI E S Venkataramiah. She was enrolled as an advocate on October 28, 1987 at Bengaluru. Justice Nagarathna was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on February 18, 2008 and became a permanent Judge on February 17, 2010. Justice Nagarathna will have a tenure, on appointment as an SC judge, till October 29, 2027.
