Why Jitin Prasada switched from Congress to BJP and why he matters?

Jitin Prasada has made a switch anticipated for quite some time. After a meeting with Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah, Jitin Prasada joined the party in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Long considered as one of the closest aides of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Jitin Prasada had been sulking within the party for being “ignored”. He was reportedly not being consulted in managing Congress’s affairs in Uttar Pradesh, his home state, and even West Bengal of which he was given the charge last year.

Jitin Prasada is said to have developed differences with the Gandhis around the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election when Rahul Gandhi joined hands with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav as the Congress went back on its decision to contest the polls alone.

A Brahmin face of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Jitin Prasada had put the Gandhis in a spot in recent times with his occasional posers. He was part of G-23, the Congress’s group of dissenters who demanded sweeping reforms in the party’s organisation.
