In this episode of Beyond the Headlines, Siddharth Varadarajan describes six key features of the November 1984 massacres and how the Gujarat 2002 violence fits the same pattern. he concludes that India needs a law to tackle mass crimes, one in which politicians and police officers who stand by as innocent people are killed are sent to jail.

Note: This video draws on my Zakir Husain memorial lecture, '1984, 1989, 2002: Three narratives of injustice, and the lessons for democracy," delivered at Zakir Husain College on Feb 24, 2015, and editorial page article in the Times of India ('When a big tree fell') on October 31, 2014.
