Election to the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly will be held in a single phase and votes will be counted on May 2.

The term of the current Tamil Nadu assembly is scheduled to come to an end on May 24.

For Tamil Nadu, the 2021 assembly elections will be unique as for the first time in over 20 years, the state will go to polls without former chief minister late J Jayalalitha and late M Karunanidhi in the fray.

In the last Tamil Nadu assembly polls, the AIADMK under the leadership of J Jayalalitha defeated the DMK.

Traditionally, all elections in Tamil Nadu in the past two decades have primarily been contested between the DMK and the AIADMK. This time, the BJP has joined hands with the AIADMK and the two parties would be contesting the assembly polls as alliance partners.
