The Kumbh Mela is the greatest of the north Indian fairs and it has exerted a mesmeric influence over the mind and the imagination of the ordinary Indian from time immemorial. It is held once every three years by rotation, on the banks of the Godavari in Nasik, the Shipra in Ujjain, the Ganga in Haridwar and the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati in Prayag or Allahabad as it is called now.

महाकुंभ मेले में पानी और खाने की बर्बादी नहीं होगी। बचे हुए खाने से मिथेन गैस तैयार की जाएगी और मेला क्षेत्र में लगने वाले अत्याधुनिक तकनीक के वाटर एटीएम से फिल्टर के बाद बेकार बहने वाला पानी दोबारा से फिल्टर मशीन में चला जाएगा। इससे पानी को शुद्ध करने में बिजली की खपत भी कम होगी। महाकुंभ मेले में आने वाले श्रद्धालुओं की ओर से होटलों में काफी मात्रा में खाना प्लेट पर ही छोड़ दिया जाता है।
