Q. How?

A. The computer instruction we would all like is DWIM: do what I meant. This doesn’t exist. Computers will act precisely within the rules we set, with no understanding of ‘the spirit of the game’. So, a software bot asked to modify itself for speed grows long legs and falls over. An AI to classify skin lesions learns that those photographed next to a ruler are more likely to be malignant. A Roomba asked not to bump into things drives backwards because there are no collision sensors on its rear.


Q. What do we do?

A. Understand this weakness, test extensively before release, and beware allowing a system in the wild to modify its own code.
