Before we had to worry about robots taking our jobs, it was pigeons.
Andrew Eborn is joined by Professor Ananth Viswanathan, Consultant Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Professor at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, to explain why.
We’ve seen machines beating the best humans at chess and Go. In medicine, they are at least as good at interpreting chest X-rays as expert humans. However, it’s worth remembering that, for highly constrained tasks like these, the might of human General Intelligence isn’t required, so much so that even pigeons can make a good job of it. A 2015 a paper by a group from UC Davis in a well respected journal (PLoS One) describes how pigeons can be taught in 2 weeks to score X-rays and tissue samples for breast cancer as accurately as humans, particularly if ‘flock sourcing’ is used.
