The festival of Lohri is celebrated a day before Makar Sankranti. The day of Lohri is considered the end of the month of Pausha and the beginning of the month of Magh. The festival of Lohri is a festival of meeting and sharing happiness with each other. The word Lohri is made up of three syllables, from wood to wood, from oh to goha i.e. from burning stove and from rewari. Lohri is also known as Lal Lahi, Lohita and Khichdwar.Sindhi society is also celebrated as Lal Lahi festival. Lohri of Lohri means fire is lit in remembrance of Yogagni-Dahan of Sati, daughter of Prajapati. On this occasion, family members are sent clothes, sweets, Revdis, fruits, etc. from the house of their married daughters, as an atonement for Daksha Prajapati not taking part of his Jamata Mahadev on the yagna.Lohri was earlier also called Loh in many places. Iron means iron. Here iron is seen attached to the pan. A new crop is harvested in Punjab on the occasion of Lohri. Rotis are made from wheat flour and fried on a loa. Hence earlier this festival was also known as Loh.The festival of Lohri is associated with the sowing and harvesting of the crop. Farmers celebrate Lohri as the beginning of their new financial year. लोहड़ी का त्‍योहार मकर संक्रांति से एक दिन पहले मनाया जाता है. लोहड़ी के दिन को पौष माह का अंत और माघ के महीने की शुरुआत मानी जाती है. लोहड़ी का त्‍योहार एक-दूसरे से मिलने-मिलाने और खुशियां बांटने का त्‍योहार है. लोहड़ी शब्द तीन अक्षरों से मिलकर बना है ल से लकड़ी, ओह से गोहा यानि जलते हुए उपले व ड़ी से रेवड़ी. लोहड़ी को लाल लाही, लोहिता व खिचड़वार नाम से भी जाना जाता है.सिन्धी समाज भी इसे लाल लाही पर्व के रूप में मनाया जाता है. लोहड़ी की लोह मतलब अग्नि दक्ष प्रजापति की पुत्री सती के योगाग्नि-दहन की याद में जलाई जाती है. यज्ञ पर अपने जामाता महादेव का भाग न निकालने के दक्ष प्रजापति के प्रायश्चित्त के रूप में इस अवसर पर परिजन अपनी विवाहिता पुत्रियों के घर से वस्त्र, मिठाई, रेवड़ी, फल आदि भेजे जाते हैं.लोहड़ी को पहले कई स्‍थानों पर लोह कहकर भी बुलाया जाता था. लोह का अर्थ होता है लोहा. यहां लोहे को तवे से जोड़कर देखा जाता है. लोहड़ी के मौके पर पंजाब में नई फसल काटी जाती है. गेहूं के आटे से रोटियां बनाकर लोह यानी तवे पर सेकीं जाती हैं. इसलिए पहले इस त्योहार को लोह के नाम से भी जाना जाता था. जानें लोहड़ी के दिन जरूर करें ये दान, घर में आएगी बरकत ।
