Genetic diseases are on a rise in Pakistan, and the major reason identified for it is cousin-marriages or marrying in the same bloodlines for generations. UrduPoint interviewed the head of the Pediatric Department Dr. Huma Arshad Cheema from Children’s Hospital. Dr. Huma explained how she managed to convince different NGOs around the world to finance genetic testing for patients here, as this facility is not available in Pakistan. Pre-natal gene testing is also done in the Children’s Hospital to find out if the fetus is carrying the harmful gene that could result in fatal genetic diseases. Dr. Huma revealed that due to the tribal system, Pakistan has become one of the biggest inbred communities transferring bad genes to upcoming generations. It results in handicapped children, children born with cancerous genes and many other kinds of mutations.
