A 19-year-old Dalit girl, who died after she was gang-raped allegedly by four upper-caste men in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district, was cremated by policemen on the night of September 29. Allegedly her family and relatives were locked up in their homes. A disturbing sequence of events took place on the night of September 29 as the family argued with the cops, female relatives threw themselves on the hood of the ambulance carrying the body and a mother who weeped helplessly as cops insisted on taking her daughter straight to cremation, without allowing a last look. The woman died in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on September 29.
