A grieving male dog whose mate was killed by a car has become a surrogate mother to two orphaned stray kittens.

Krisada Chaiwong, 36, adopted the stray cats that she found injured on the road outside her home in Bueng Kan, Thailand on August 16.

The loving pet owner looked for their mother or signs of siblings but there were no other cats in the neighbourhood.

Krisada was surprised when she took them home and her male dog, Max, acted like a mother to the two felines.

She said: "I had two dogs but then, one of them died when they were hit by a car recently. Max has always been sad since then, but when he saw the kittens, instantly he became happier.

''The kittens have become so close to my male dog that they treat him like a mother and they try to drink milk from him."

Footage shows one of the kittens trying to drink milk from the male dog as if it is its mother.

Krisada added that the her three pets are like a family now and are always close together.

She said: "I decided to adopt the kittens because I noticed how happy they have made my dog. I'm glad I was right about doing that and now the kittens have a family.''
