Bankura district is a land of temples. The town has a glorious past that is reflected in its rich architecture. music and handicrafts such as pottery and weaving .In the Mahabharata. Bankura was described as Suhmobhumi. Scholars differ in their opinion about the etymology of the name Bankura. One of the most influential gods of the district Dharmathakur is called Bankura Roy. The name of the district may come from his name. In 1979. the word “Bancoorah” was found in the map of Renal. In 1863. Gastrel referred this region as Bancoonda. Bir Hambir was the 49th king of Bagdi Malla dynasty. Bir Bankura was one of his two sons. Raja Bir Hambir divided his kingdom into 22 tarafs or circles and gave one to his each son. Taraf Jaybelia fell to the lot of Bir Bankura. He developed a town in his taraf and the town was later named as 'Bankura' after its founder's name.

Bankura district is located in the north western part of the state of West Bengal. The Damodar River flows along the Northern boundary of the district. In the 2011 census. Bankura city had a population of 137.386.Bankura has a tropical monsoon climate .

Bankura Junction railway station is managed by the South Eastern Railways and is on the Adra-Midnapore rail route.

Bankura has gained much popularity among tourists hailing from India. The place has a rich cultural and traditional heritage. The place has contributed toward modern Bengal art and architecture. The tourist spots can be divided into four (4) zones.

1. Western Zone
a. Susunia Hill is a 1500 ft high hill of Bankura District. It is 21 km from Bankura town . It is known for a natural spring with plenty of natural beauty and a historical stone engraving.

b. Biharinath Hill is the tallest (448 m) of Bankura District. It is 57 km from Bankura Town. Biharinath has hills. dense forest. water bodies. river Damodar. and a temple of Lord Shiva.

2.South Zone
a. Mukutmanipur is a tourist spot of Bankura District. It is 55 km from Bankura District headquarters. It is the second biggest earthen dam of India. A sever place is surrounded by smaller hills and a beautiful dam at the centre. especially when water flows across the Rocky River. A special attraction point is Deer Park. 5.5 km away from the main place and connected through ferry service.It is a popular and ranks among the top ten popular picnic destinations of Bengal.

b. Jhilimili has a dense natural forest. Jhilimili is a tourist centre. It lies 70 km from Bankura Town. In Bengali. Jhilimili means sparkle or twinkle.

c. SUTAN FOREST:This is a beautiful tourist place with shades of Sal. Piyal. Mahua. Palash and Shimul. about 60 km away from Bankura. This is also the homeland of the Santhal. Munda and Bhumijas. It becomes charming and colorful with palash and krishnachura flowers in the day time a
