Thousands of flies invade restaurant in northern Thailand

A restaurant had to start using nets around the table after being invaded by thousands of flies.

The creatures swarmed around the eatery in Loei, northeastern Thailand , last Friday morning (July 10).

The restaurant owner Saithong Kawol, 60, said her customer numbers had dropped due to the problem with the flies. She pleaded for help from the authorities.

She said: "Customers have been scared of the flies and stayed away ever since they started invading my restaurant.

"I want the authorities to take action immediately because many of the restaurant owners are losing income due to this problem."

The head officer of the provincial public health authority Somporn Unkham said they had figured out about the cause of the problem and are working on the solution.

She said: "We investigated and found that the flies were drawn to the area by the chicken manure that was used in the dragon fruit grove.

"However, we will not blame the orchardists on the problem as their fruits were also damaged by the flies' eggs as well.

"We are now working on issuing the measure to control the use and to eradicate the flies before they could cause more damage."
