Japan is set to face Spain in the Fed Cup Qualifiers in Cartagena, Spain.
The two-times Grand Slam Naomi Osaka led the Japanese team with her first match taking place in the Rubber 1 against Sara Torres Tormo on Friday, then Osaka is set to face Carla Suarez Navarro on Saturday in Rubber 3.
Japan have never won against Spain in the Fed Cup with a 3-0 in favour of Spain in their head-to-head.
Both teams already played last year, with Spain beating the Japanese team 3-2 in Japan.
Spain have won the Fed Cup five times, while Japan have never lifted the trophy since their debut in 1964.
It will be Carla Suarez Navarro's last Fed Cup as the Spaniard confirmed she is retiring at the end of the season.
