It is believed that on the day of Mauni Amavasya, the water of the Ganges becomes nectar. That is why Mauni Amavasya is considered very special for Magh bath. On this day, a Vrati has to behave like a sage throughout the day while wearing silence, that is why this Amavasya is called Mauni Amavasya. This festival of Mauni Amavasya is being celebrated on 24th January i.e. today.

माना जाता है कि मौनी अमावस्या के दिन गंगा का जल अमृत बन जाता है. इसलिये माघ स्नान के लिये मौनी अमावस्या को बहुत ही खास माना गया है. इस दिन व्रती को मौन धारण करते हुए दिन भर मुनियों सा आचरण करना पड़ता है, इसी कारण यह अमावस्या मौनी अमावस्या कहलाती है. मौनी अमावस्या का यह त्यौहार 24 जनवरी को यानी आज मनाया जा रहा है.
