Mauni Amavasya is considered very important in Hindu scriptures. This Amavasya falls in Magh month, hence it is also called Maghi Amavasya. This year, Mouni Amavasya is falling on 24 January. On this day, a Vrati has to behave like a sage throughout the day while wearing silence, that is why this Amavasya is called Mauni Amavasya. According to religious beliefs, bathing in holy rivers on this day gives special merit. It is believed that on this day the water of the Ganges becomes nectar. Therefore, Maghi Amavasya i.e. Mauni Amavasya is considered very special for Magh Snan.

हिंदू धर्म शास्त्रों में मौनी अमावस्या का बहुत महत्व माना जाता है। यह अमावस्या माघ मास में आती है, इसलिए इसे माघी अमवास्या भी कहा जाता है। इस साल मौनी अमावस्या 24 जनवरी को पड़ रही है। इस दिन व्रती को मौन धारण करते हुए दिन भर मुनियों सा आचरण करना पड़ता है, इसी कारण यह अमावस्या मौनी अमावस्या कहलाती है। धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार इस दिन पवित्र नदियों में स्नान से विशेष पुण्यलाभ प्राप्त होता है। माना जाता है कि इस दिन गंगा का जल अमृत बन जाता है. इसलिये माघ स्नान के लिये माघी अमावस्या यानि मौनी अमावस्या को बहुत ही खास माना गया है।
