The Roller Derby Women Kicking Ass and Making History in Asia
  • 4 years ago
The crash and bash of roller derby is gaining speed as a sport in Asia. Originally conceived in Chicago in the 1930s’,

Roller Derby is a full contact sport that takes place on an oval track. Five skaters from each team take to the track at any one time. The game is fast and entertaining albeit a little chaotic and confusing for a first time spectator.

Earlier this year, Hong Kong hosted a Pan Asian tournament. The local team took on the Pan Asian Spring Rollers, a combined squad made up of skaters from China, Thailand and the UAE.

Snooky Wong (Co-president, Hong Kong Roller Derby) has been instrumental in the sports growth in Asia. Her love for the skating life is contagious and by helping to attract international talent to coach and run workshops, through organising tournaments and training she is slowing seeing the sport grow.
