The Science Behind Growing a Perfect Christmas Tree

The Science Behind Growing
a Perfect Christmas Tree.
About 30 million Christmas trees are sold in the U.S. each year.
Michigan State University has a team of forest researchers who are experts in Christmas tree production.
Their research will likely influence
what type of Christmas tree you
buy a decade from now.
Bert Cregg and his team are
focused on two factors:
genetics and culture techniques.
They perform various cold-hardiness experiments inside of chest freezers in MSU's Plant and Soil Sciences Building.
If we're thinking of selecting a new species, we can screen rapidly, rather than waiting for that 1-in-20 winter to determine if a tree is hardy enough for a given location, Bert Cregg, via 'Wired'.
In addition to hardiness, Cregg's team also studies size, color, needle retention and coning.
Cones are probably the single biggest problem our growers face here in the Midwest, Bert Cregg, via 'Wired'.
Cones bud in the spring and
develop through the summer,
robbing the trees of resources
