'We are going nowhere!' Private security force out township people occupying Cape Town building
  • 5 years ago
A private security company in Cape Town fired rubber bullets in order to force dozens of people from townships to vacate the building which they had occupied for the past two weeks.

The building, which is located in the Main Road of the Cape Town suburb of Observatory, was occupied by people from townships who demanded the government provide them alternative accommodation.

Footage of the attempted eviction, filmed on October 2, shows heavily armed security personnel attempting to escort the township people out of the building.

The township dwellers claimed many of them had been on government waiting lists for accommodation for years, and were occupying the building in protest.

The building was previously an old age home, and the property was sold to a private developer, who had left it vacant.

One of the township occupiers can be heard shouting to the armed officers: "We are going nowhere! You can kill us all!"
