More Chinese women are choosing to be single moms, despite the lingering prejudice in Chinese society against single motherhood.

Until recently, it was difficult for single parents to register their children for social security in China. But with the country’s birth rate falling, the government is easing restrictions on single parenthood.

Now, some women are choosing to have children without getting married, even going abroad for expensive IVF procedures. What’s driving their decision, and what challenges do they face?
