Federer routs Tsonga to charge into quarters

MANILA, Philippines – Roger Federer announced his return as a grand slam contender by routing Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to charge into the Australian Open quarter-finals. The former world No. 1, coming off a weak 2013, channeled his vintage days to stun the Frenchman in just 112 minutes. The Swiss had suffered early exits at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year. With the win, Federer muscled into his 41st Grand Slam quarter-final, equaling the record of American Jimmy Connors in the professional era. -- Mornings @ ANC, January 21, 2014.
