About 1.9 million people have been left out of the National Register of Citizens published by authorities on August 31, 2019, in India’s northeastern state of Assam. Those not included in the list identifying a total of 31.1 million people as legal residents of the state could be considered stateless and staying in the country illegally unless they provide proof of citizenship within 120 days.
