MANILA -- Political analysts say President Benigno Aquino III should not have used the term "abolish" if he only intended to reform the pork barrel system. In an interview with ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda" on Tuesday, Professor Clarita Carlos said she does not accept the executive department's explanation that it needs lawmakers' discretion to help identify projects needed in the budget. Carlos said lawmakers should focus on their main job which is to craft laws instead of thinking of how to provide scholarships and medical assistance to their constituents. "Siguro yung verb hindi i-abolish. Siguro is i-reformat mo siya, kung nakita mong may mga pang-aabuso and then altogether ilagay mo siya sa national budget," she said. "Kasi ako hindi ko tanggap yung sinasabi nila na pano namin malalaman lahat ng pangangailangan ng bansa. Malalaman mo, ba't hindi mo ayusin ang planning mo... You can do this if you want to," Carlos added. Meanwhile, columnist and Professor Randy David said Aquino should not view the public outrage over pork barrel as an attack against his administration. David added that the country should get rid of "patronage politics" which often leads to corruption. -- ANC
