This Day in History:
President Nixon Resigns.
August 8, 1974.
Following a series of scandals popularly
referred to as "Watergate," President
Richard Nixon announced his resignation
to the American people via a televised address.
Located in Washington D.C.,
the Watergate complex
headquartered the Democratic
National Committee (DNC).
Following a botched break-in
at the DNC, the arrested burglars
were eventually linked to Nixon and
high members of his administration.
A special counsel investigation led by
prosecutor Archibald Cox led to the
adoption of three article of impeachment
against Nixon, including for obstruction of justice.
Following the release of recorded Oval Office
conversations in which Nixon clearly orders
an end to the Watergate investigation,
Nixon bowed to pressure and resigned.
By taking this action. I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America, President Richard Nixon, August 6, 1974.
