March 15th, 2008. After their epic 1st fight that sparked the beginning of an explosive rivalry, “Pacman” and “Dinamita” met again to determine a winner after their ferocious 1st encounter 4 years ago ended in a disputed 3 way draw, in a rematch aptly billed as “Unfinished Business”.
Prefight records; Pacquiao 45(34)-3-2, Marquez 48(35)-3-1.
Marquez’s WBC Super Featherweight Title is on the line while the vacant The Ring Magazine Junior Lightweight Title is hanging in the balance.
Pacquiao had beaten notable oppositions in Chatchai Sasakul, Jorge Eliecer Julio, Lehlo Ledwaba, Jorge Solis, Oscar Larios, Hector Velazquez, Erik Morales (2x) & Marco Antonio Barrera (2x) going into the fight while Marquez had scored meaningful wins over Alfred Kotey, Agapito Sanchez, Daniel Jimenez, Manuel Medina, Robbie Peden, Derrick Gainer, Victor Polo, Rocky Juarez, Marco Antonio Barrera & Orlando Salido.
Pacquiao was a 2-1 betting favorite against Marquez, and this rematch lived up to expectations and just about as equally exciting as their 1st fight. Pacquiao scored a knockdown in the 3rd frame, and almost scored a 2nd knockdown of the round going into the final seconds but the ropes held Marquez up.
Similar to their 2004 bout, Marquez arguably did better as a whole in terms of dictating the fight and might have won more rounds than Pacquiao. However, Pacquiao’s 3rd round knockdown made the difference as he was awarded close SD with scores of 115-112, 114-113 & 112-115.
Once again, the outcome remains one of the most disputed in the sport but there was no doubt that both fighters gave their hearts and souls to settle the score but this rematch proved that “Unfinished Business” remains unfinished still, and a 3rd bout was inevitable.
A panel of 73 individuals consisting of boxers, writers, reporters and analysts scored the fight unofficially; 32 scored for Marquez, 32 scored for Pacquiao & 9 scored it a draw.
Harold Lederman (among them) had it 115-112 for The Pacman.
3 years later, Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez would attempt to settle their score for good in "The 25th Round Begins", this time as Welterweights.
