Celebrate National Deep Dish Pizza Day

Celebrate National Deep Dish Pizza Day April 5th marks a celebration
of this famous pie. The pizza is also known as "Chicago-style"
due to its creation at a Pizzeria Uno
in the Illinois city. The bulky pizza, whose crust can be up to three inches deep, was first made in 1943. Its creation eventually led to "stuffed pizza,"
which also debuted in Chicago in 1974. To give the deep dish crust a
yellow-like appearance,
wheat and semolina flour is added. The pizza is also cooked in a round pan,
just a like a dessert pie would. Before cooking, the dough is spread out
to fill the pan, allowing the pizza's
ingredients to be added. The cheese is placed first, followed
by a mixture of meat and veggies. When it comes to
making stuffed pizza, an
extra layer of dough is used. This second layer is placed above
the cheese, meat and vegetables. For stuffed pies, canola oil is
used in the dough most of the time. Tomato sauce then blankets the second layer before the pizza is ready to be cooked.
