J&K flood: Congress questions army’s brave rescue operation
  • 5 years ago
Frustrated Kashmiris who have been marooned on top of houses for days on end are furious with what they allege is a 'selective' rescue effort by the state government and armed forces. As tempers rise on the ground, Prime Minister Modi ordered a "ramp up" of the rescue operations at a high level emergency meeting chaired in the state.

On Wednesday, there were reports that a mob had stopped IAF choppers from landing at the governor's residence as rumours that the army was only rescuing VIPs gained traction.

Another group of people stoned Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's residence, while reported that an NDRF jawan was attacked by locals waiting to be rescued. The soldier had received severe injuries on his hand when the locals attacked him, the report said.
We want water and food. We will die here. Please ask IAF choppers to drop some food pockets here,” the newspaper quoted one resident as saying.

"Flood victims are narrating horrifying tales at make-shift camps, alleging selective approach to rescue operations. The stories are heartrending,''

Residents told that there is no government presence on the ground, and even the Army and NDRF are missing. The growing sense of official indifference is igniting tempers on the ground.
