Madras High Court: Chop off arms of those who indulge in forgery

Cut their fingers and chop off their arms - this is the punishment a sitting judge of the Madras high court would have awarded had there been provisions in Indian law.

Justice S Vaidhyanathan, dealing with a case of forged land documents submitted in a sub-registrar office in Chennai, said: "I came across an article that Iran has unveiled its latest innovation in criminal punishment - a machine that cuts off the fingers of thieves, and it is being used for cutting off the fingers of culprits by a court of Shiraz. For having committed forgery, this court is of the view that such a stringent punishment of chopping off fingers should be awarded to the petitioner. But there is no law to that effect in our country."

The judge also imposed Rs 1 lakh as fine on the person who indulged in forgery. The person had moved the high court for registration of property on the basis of the forged documents.
