NewsX: Narendra Modi is BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday named Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, overriding doubts in the party about his polarising character.

"Sri Narendra Modi will be our prime ministerial candidate," party chief Rajnath Singh told a press conference called after a meeting of leaders of BJP's parliamentary board..

The decision caps the rise of 62-year-old Modi in the party, which has spent nearly a decade in the political wilderness.

Advani on Friday wrote a letter to Rajnath Singh in which he expressed his "pain" at the way the party was functioning but didn't name Modi.

"This afternoon when you came to meet me, I spoke to you about my dilemma over attending the BJP parliamentary board meeting. I expressed my displeasure to you over how the party is functioning. In the end I have decided that it's better that I stay away from the meeting," said Advani in his letter, which was released to the media later.
