Food Security Bill: Almost all parties expected to support the Food Bill
  • 5 years ago
The Food Bill has been repeatedly stalled due to disruptions in the parliament last two weeks. If at all it is heard today, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is likely to lead the debate.

The government has claimed that after amendments made to the bill, majority of the parties are on board. With general elections, less than a year away, no political party wants to be seen opposing the bill.

If cleared, the govt would be spending an estimated Rs 1.25 lakh crore annually on supply of about 62 million tonnes of rice, wheat and coarse cereals to 67 per cent of the population.
